The New Club is made up of sociable Cheltonians -
The New Club opened on 31st October 1874 as a private gentlemen’s club, restricting its membership to prominent citizens and the higher ranks of the Armed Services. Today the Club has given up this image, by extending a warm welcome to lady members and by embracing many professions, business people, civil servants, the young and not so young.
The Club was first housed in a handsome building in the Promenade where the Quadrangle now stands. The Club moved to its present location in 1970, once again into a substantial Regency building but in a quieter street, still within easy walking distance of the town centre. There, visitors will find excellent shops and restaurants, theatres and the Town Hall which is the centre of Cheltenham’s numerous festivals. The Cheltenham festivals cover music, science, jazz, literature, etc. and of course not forgetting the famous Cheltenham Festival of racing!
